OK, supplementary question here.

I have an outboard fuel tank which has the usual fittings. How can I convert it so that I can use it for a temporary diesel tank?

The only issue as I see it is the diesel return. The outboard tank which has the standard Evinrude fitting is just a single pipe isn't it, there's no return is there?

So, would I just drill a hole and poke the return into it or is there a better solution?

Objective here is so I can properly remove the tank on the generator (see the other post) and have a temporary tank for insurance.

Thanks
James

hi James,
you can get a threaded hose tail to fit to the tank. drill the correct size hole and put nuts on the hose fitting in and outside the tank to clamp it on, bit of sealant or gasket in there would be good too.
Would be more secure using the hose tail than just stuffing the tube in. only cost a couple bucks.

CAUTION ! CAUTION ! Drilling holes in tanks that have previously held fuel is almost as dangerous as welding. IF YOU HAVE TO DO IT I SUGGEST YOU TAKE THE SAME PRECAUTIONS.
I have fiddled with motors all my adult life and had two lucky escapes, I would leave any work on a fuel tank to an expert.

I should have mentioned, all my outboard tanks are plastic, I am assuming James' is too.

Hi All
You don't need to do anything to the Tank.!!!!!!!!!!!
just cut a TEE piece into the fuel line and bring the return back from the motor to the Tee. The eccess fuel returning goes around again and again whilst picking up additional fuel from the tank as it is used. works a treat.
cheers

Just make sure that the plastic in the tank is suitable for diesel as not all are
