Unless you have a BOATAHOME then its a caravan and gets the subsidized under the equalization scheme :lol:

My Bass Strait crossing in January 2015 cost $1,920 return! I have a Nissan X-Trail towing a Farr6000, totalling some 11.8m. Don't underestimate your rig's overall length, as you get measured as you check-in. Consider sliding your mast forward over the towing vehicle, and removing the rudder! (When one sleeps in one's boat, t'would be nice to qualify for the federal government 'caravan' subsidy :D )

I just checked the government webs sites, they dont seem to give any information as to what a Caravan is or isnt, however, the Spirit of Tasmainia web site states "A 'Caravan' is a unit which is designed and constructed primarily to provide sleeping accommodation. However it is a separate non motorised unit and therefore must be towed by a motorised unit in order to be transported. "

Going by this definition I would say most of what is sold today as "Caravans" are not really caravans, they are now mini houses and certainly are not designed primarily to provide sleeping accommodation.

I would say a Mac 26 is more a caravan than the caravans of today under this definition :lol:

We have some friends who took their Timpany across for the cost of a caravan..... The owner in talking to the booking clerk did tell them that what they were towing was used to sleep and live in as they toured Tasmania and got the caravan rates. He even went so far as to point out that one end of the 'van' has a pointy end....
Anyone else want to try for it.... we might just start to get T.S recognised as floating caravans.....(heaven forbid but if it saves a few $ then worth it.

I cant see the difference, we get slugged house boat rates on Eildon and we cant sail on some reservoirs BECAUSE we have sleeping accommodation, the only difference is we dont need a earth bound camp site and come to think of it we are better environmentally because we produce a lot of our own power via solar panels and our waste is held in the porta potti

The Tasmanian Ferry people seem to run what I call a "charge maximisation scheme" The story changes when you enquire about the "special" rates. When you get down to the nitty gritty of booking the story changes, indeed book today and tomorrow the price can change and you don't have access to the new price if it is lower. The Wench has a brother in Tassie and we would dearly like to sail there, but just too expensive and too many if and butts with the Ferry.

It is also worth checking with Toll and Searoad who both run roll on roll off vessels between Melbourne and Devonport (Toll, to Burnie)

Funnily enough though the rates often end up all very close to each other
