I was too embarrassed to admit to my stupidity but Just wanted to up date every one re the Honda outboard motor ..very cheap .situation .web site .
Fortunately one hour after I sent my $550 dollars off I registered and noticed a very suspect transaction . Like any one I got too excited and I couldn't resist . I was a idiot the signs were quite clear ..every time I clicked on a payment method it came back as direct bank transfer . I wished to BPay by credit card but became stupid and did direct transfer..fortunately I was alerted by this site early and notified my bank immediately ..they advised they would do their best ...today my money was refunded. Greg I hope you have the same outcome .
Any way you live and learn..never ever direct bank transfer!! these days too many ways to exchange money safely with out that ole chess nut.
Would have loved that motor at half the price but I was dreaming

I used their website query form to ask for price and availability of ~$200 worth of parts (just to see if they would even bother replying). No reply of course, and indeed the website has none of the support/parts/service links you'd expect.

I've been busy earlier this week dealing with this issue.

I reported it to the Banks concerned, Police and Google.

I have to say the banks worked quickly and did their best.

The Police responded quickly but for obvious reasons, there has been no feedback. If you are scammed, use the ACORN site, give them the scammers bank details, and the relevant Police seem to move quickly.

I asked the moderators to limit the earlier posts on this site incase conversations alerted the scammers to the Police activity.

The bans could not give details on the scammer account that was frozen but I was told there was a lot of money in the account, so there is lots of victims and hope I will get my money back, maybe.

My biggest frustration was trying to deal with Google. There is no clear way a Luddite like me can alert them to these thefts. Google had lots of legal tick the box stuff but I needed assistance to find their complaints site and even then they kept asking me to go back and redo my report, worse than hopeless and I suspect the site remained in use at least a day longer than necessary due to Google. There is something very wrong at Google.

Oliveoyl, you may have got your money back quickly because the bank had not transferred the money. they send the money overnight so if you recall it on the same day, they might be able to stop it.

The scammers used a small bank which was not active on the weekend. Fortunately the fraud section at that bank appeared to freeze the scammer's account on Saturday, I will need to thank them if I get my money back. They probably used many accounts at different banks.

I think they used ME Bank, which is online only I think, this just makes it much easier for fraudsters to set up accounts and the paper trail that much harder to follow. they could of used anyones ID to set it up, its not like they have to produce photo ID that can be verified by looking at the person standing in front of them.

Sort of makes the 100 point ID thing to set up accounts a bit pointless

I think that its pretty well known that Google are very difficult to deal with personally...

I work for an IT security company and we had one of our execs give a talk on security/privacy once and I took away some interesting advice. From memory it was 'Beware of free services as you (user) become the commodity.'

"If you're not paying for the service then you're not the customer; you're the product".
Their website is still up.

The Google search and links no longer lead to the scammer's site.

Sometime between the last two posts, google removed all trace of them from their search results.
The website itself is still up.
Their domain name maps to 198.54.115.2.
This ip address in turn maps to an ISP called "Namecheap" (seriously!) located in Los Angeles. There's nothing particularly odd about that, nor does it tell us anything about where they really are; my domain name, email, photos, etc are hosted by a similar company in Chicago.

My efforts to close this scam and recover my money are finished.

My mistake, I thought I was smarter than that.

I received a refund of my payment from the relevant bank yesterday.

Information I gleaned from followup on these things is there was a lot of money in the Bank account(s?) before my advice alerted the bank fraud people to freeze the account.

Assuming the scammers were removing funds as quickly as practical there will be lots of victims who won't recover their money.

I was talking with a neighbor about his 150hp outboard and he mentioned he was considering buying one from that site, he did not move on the thought, fortunately. There are lots of people out there that are hurt and lots that were lucky to not take the offer.

My guess is anyone who lost money and has not recovered it yet has lost the money.

The Police moved quickly when I reported it via ACORN, the banks moved quickly, but they are only as good as the information provided. My work background probably helped me do the administrative stuff as efficiently as practical.

I'd like to thank others who offered good advice, I was aware of most actions needed but it still helped others to follow the processes.

Good luck to anyone else caught in this scam, I know there are others who have not been public in their disclosure.

I'd love to take one of these scammers for a short sail in deep water.

Glad you got your money back, a pair of cement flippers for the short sail would be an asset.

'I’ve been done over': More Aussies caught by barbecue scam sites

More websites spruiking too-good-to-be-true deals on barbecues, outboard motors and outdoor furniture have been shuttered, months after two Latvians were accused of running a sophisticated scam network.
...
“You know that old saying, if it’s too good to be true then it is too good to be true,” she said.
“Alarm bells should have rung.”

And back in June:

The **** thing about these kinds of scams is this.

It wasn't until I agreed to receive my electricity bills by email that I began to receive multiple scam electricity accounts by email.

It wasn't until my wife registered her new business with ASIC that she immediately began to receive scam ASIC notices.

I think that until these bigwigs can control this kind of thing properly, because heaven knows we can't, then they should stop pushing punters like us to operate online the whole time.

As you may already know, I have a domain name and hosting which costs me US$12 per quarter - just over Au$1 per week. This gives me somewhere to put images, etc, for use on TSP, but it also allows me to create as many email addresses and forwarders as I like on my domain.

So when I need to give an email address to a company, say the "ACME anvil supply company", I give them "acme@<my domain name>" and I create a forwarder which redirects any email sent to their unique email address to a dedicated email address for collecting bills, etc.

Obviously sometimes they express surprise that my email address is their company name, so I explain the concept of a honeypot to them. In the even that I get anything other than legitimate emails from ACME at their allocated address, I know who leaked the address.

I also mention that in the time that I have been doing this (some years now) only one such email address has been targeted for spam. My ISP leaked their allocated email address. I also had a phone call purporting to be from them trying to get me to give them my credit card number to pay a 25c charge for an SMS sent from a prepaid data sim card. Basically someone had access to their system, and when I presented the evidence to them ("you might be interested in this breach"), they weren't interested and told me I should get better spam protection.

Needless to say they're no longer my ISP...
