Maybe an over the centre lock? Push the arms straight then a little bit further - the hatch lowers a bit but then the arms are not allowed to rotate any further. The hatch weight then locks the position? A small bracket mounted on one of the arms will do this.

I think moving the mounting point 50mm closer to the tiller is warranted. But the hatch opening / closing would need to be checked as would the level of thickness of the deck where the pin mounts.
