I am bidding on the RL24 full battened mainsail and jib.

The jib is not a standard size and anyone considering it needs to check deck fittings carefully, my guess its off a yacht with different fore stay locations. My Jib just went to god so I have no real choice other than a new jib.

The full battened mainsail only suits my rig, earlier rigs won't fit. It also needs some money spent to make it suitable for my yacht but its a hell of a lot better than my cruising main (the rag).

The other RL24 mainsail is an older design barely worth buying unless you have an old RL24 and need a cheap cruising sail.

Seen on ebay, Holt Allen 25mm spinnaker pole end fittings - $10 each, ideal for the "other" end of a boat hook for securely holding ropes or to make a whisker pole.

They say they have 26 of them, so don't bother bidding up the price!

Spotted - For the electrically ambitious Queenslander

Post by zebedee »

Spotted on ebay in Brisbane, 500AH 2V AGM batteries, $170 for two to get 167AH and 12V.

Image

What you're looking at are cases, 34kg, 300mm L x 210mm W x 140mm H, each containing three 2V 167AH cells, with external connections. They can be connected in parallel, hence their description as 2V and 500AH, but two cases (six cells) can also be connected in series to give 167AH and 12V for $170, which is a pretty good price if you need that much.

You could put the two cases in different locations, say one each side of the centrecase (and maybe remove some ballast if you've got any there already). They're fairly low too, which might open up more mounting options; on my Castle for example, I could remove my existing batteries under the front of the cockpit and put these on the floor just in front of the keel case to get the weight forward and central, with a false floor on top for the porta potti that I never carry anyway.

For Melbourne people with less demanding electrical systems, I bought two of these recently for a kids 6V car and they worked well.

They are old stock that has discharged on the shelf but charged up properly and work fine.

Spotted, for the man (or woman) whose transom is feeling a little naked:

Fleming Self Steering System
Image

Asking $2900, which might be a bit much, since this plumbers nightmare was passed in at $840 last week and is now available for $1200:

Self Steering System - Monitor

Personally I think they're taking the wrong approach. I mean, if someone were to take a poll asking who is the person on TSP most likely to buy such a thing, I wouldn't be embarrassed to end up top of the list. But even I have more sense than to buy one.

On the other hand, I'd probably pay good money to spend a hands-on afternoon working out how it works...

Any ideas?
Late to the party but...

I got sick of no springs so went down to bunnings and got a pair of gal springs from their spring section. I figure I needed about a 10-15kg pull for each side so handed tested them in store and ended up with some springs about 200mm long. They are short yes, but easily extended with a small piece of line. Now raising is dead easy, a one hand approx 15kg lift leaving the other hand to lock in the sliders.

Don't know if you're still around flybywoody but this is a simple $20 fix and 20 minutes to fit.

I was adjusting an old tilt-a-door garage door on the weekend; it is supported by a pair of springs about 600mm long, 50mm diameter.

Springs are generally defined by their spring rate (the change in the force per unit change in length), and by their dimensions, but depending on your use and the geometry, you may be able to tolerate quite a low spring rate as long as the force is high enough at the amount of stretch when installed.

Stainless gas struts are another quite affordable option if you can find a geometry which works.

Skiff with two dagger boards. Dagger boards make good rudder blades and two provides a spare.
